Danas: Will Serbia Import Chinese Workers?
19 October 2005 14:47 FOCUS News Agency
Belgrade.

Serbian Minister of Labor and Social Policy Slobodan Lalovic reproved on Monday some firms in the country that instead of Serbian workers they employ Chinese ones as well, criticizing the way unemployed people in Serbia think, Serbian newspaper Danas reports today.

The director of Serbia’s National Employment Service Radovan Ristanovic believes that this fact should be accepted as “a reflection of the rational behaviour of unemployed people”.

He also believes that the reasons why a person wouldn’t accept a job may be that this person has been registered as an unemployed or s/he may work in the grey zone and earn more in that way.

Ristanovic links the case of the company, forced to employ Chinese workers, to the problem of the so-called structural unemployment. The results of the enquiry, conducted by Consit for the needs of the World Bank in Pancevo, Kralevo and Nis, show that 80% of the unemployed look for a job only in the town they live and almost half of them would accept any job offered.

Ristanovic claims the fact is disturbing because it shows the bad mobility of Serbian labor force. Salaries in Serbia are comparatively low and are not always enough to cover the expenses of a residence changes.

Among the foreigners that find interesting job opportunities in Serbia Ristanovic points Bulgarians and Romanians along with Chinese.

Employment of foreigners in Serbia is regulated through the Employment of Foreign Labor Force Bill that is currently being revised.
